City Services

The Philadelphia Fire Department delivers efficient and effective fire protection and provides emergency medical services to the citizens of Philadelphia.

Philadelphia's Department of Human Services works to protect children from abuse, neglect, and delinquency; to ensure their safety and permanency in nurturing home environments; and to strengthen and preserve families by enhancing community-based prevention services.

The Office of the Inspector General enhances the public confidence in City government by investigating complaints of fraud, corruption, and abuse; and by recommending programs/policies which educate and raise the awareness of all City officials/employees.

The Department of Licenses and Inspections (L&I) administers and enforces the City's code requirements, including building, fire, housing, business, and zoning regulations, for the enhancement of public safety.

The Philadelphia Police Department works in partnership with the citizens of Philadelphia to raise the level of public safety through law enforcement, reducing the fear and incidence of crime.

The Department of Public Health protects the health of Philadelphia´s citizens through enhanced use of public health data to better target neighborhood services; strengthening of the city's response system to health emergencies; and improvement of the department's ability to deliver culturally competent services to diverse communities.

The Philadelphia Department of Recreation manages and operates all City recreation facilities, including Veteran's Stadium and 100 public parks and squares, to encourage and enhance the development of the physical, cultural, artistic, and life skills of the residents of the City.

The Department of Records sets records management standards and procedures for all City of Philadelphia departments, boards, commissions and agencies, manages key central recordkeeping operations and services, directs public access to municipal records, and establishes and collects fees to cover the cost of providing copies of records.

The Streets Department provides clean and safe streets for the city of Philadelphia. It carries out its mission through four divisions: Sanitation, Highways, Engineering, which includes design, streetlighting and traffic units; and Administration.

The Office of Emergency Shelter and Services (OESS) provides comprehensive case management, protective, preventive, and referral services to adults and families in need of temporary shelter and affordable housing.

The Philadelphia Water Department provides safe drinking water for residents, supplies water for industries to manufacture goods here in the City, and protects the region's water resources.
